Phoenix for Portfolio ===================== (last update: January 12th 2003) System requirements ------------------- This game only runs correctly on the Atari-Portfolio palmtop- computer. Mine came with DIP 2.11 v1.072. I hope that there aren't any problems with other versions. However, please backup important data before starting the program. I assume no liability for any damage which may result from the use of this software. Disk space: 4848 Bytes (compressed with APACK) + 320 Bytes for the highscores (phoenix.sco) free RAM: about 8 KByte (should be no problem) Note: If phoenix.sco does not exist yet, it will be created in the current directory. Game play --------- Space = fire Cursor left = move left Cursor right = move right Cursor up/down = use shield (if available) S = switch sound on/off P = pause T = pause in text-mode to enable apps O = turn power off for a longer pause ESC = exit to system H = display help J = switch Joystick control on/off other keys = display info Disabling sound: Start Phoenix by typing "PHOENIX /noSound" or supply any other parameter. Joystick-support: Optionally, a digital Joystick (as for use with C=64, Atari 800 etc.) can be connected to the parallel port with a simple adaptor. The specifications of the adaptor were defined by Jan Sedlak in October 1995 and are very close to these of the Joystick-adaptor for PC64, a C=64-emulator by W. Lorenz for IBM-compatible PCs. Please contact me for further info or get the file joystick.lzh. The autodetect-routine of PHOENIX enables the Joystick-control, if the adaptor is found at the start of the program. The game: In every level several fleets of enemy spacecrafts have to be destroyed. In the last stage of each level the big spaceship must be hit four times in the center. For every 2nd time you manage to destroy it, a bonus ship is given to you before entering the next level (max. 4 spare ships). The number of levels is not limited, but difficulty increases. Every 1000 points you receive a shield that can be used once. Scoring: hit small enemy aircraft = 10 Pts hit big enemy aircraft at hull = 1 Point hit big enemy aircraft at first shield = 3 Pts hit big enemy aircraft at second shield = 5 Pts hit big enemy aircraft at the center = 100 Pts Version history --------------- 1992 First unpublished version 1994 Public version uploaded to umich.edu This version used a separate font file "phoenix.fnt" 1995 Added Joystick support 1998 Expenrimental new version available at my homepage - Faster graphics without BIOS-calls - Revised keyboard control (using own interrupt handler) - Own alarm interrupt handler - Clockspeed compensation for tuned Portfolios 2003 Released "Phoenix 2003" - Bugfixes, mainly a crash of the previous version after level 3. - Power-off feature ("o"-key) - Textmode feature to enable the use of internal applications during a game.
