The installation software takes care of this transfer (in DOS and Windows). just type "flserver [enter]" to run the software on Portfolio * uninstalling just type "c:\portfol\noflink [enter]" to uninstall the software * Internet, BBS download - we recommend to put the downloaded files onto a diskette and start the installation from A: drive (installation from HDD may not be successful) * FolioLink works with your data! Incomplete installation, broken PF<->PC connection may result in data lost on your RAM cards, RAM disk! Please always doublecheck before you start to work. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The purpose of the free demo version ------------------------------------ 1. We want to give all PF users (and all other people) a chance to see that Portfolio is supported in a unique way which is just another reason why Portfolio is "our most favourite" palmtop. 2. We want to give the users a possibility to evaluate our software before they decide to order a full version. 3. We believe that the free demo version may spread more quickly and to a larger number of Portfolio users. Thus we hope this will make publicity to our Portfolio activities which in return will lead to higher demand for new, high-quality software and hardware. 4. Last but not least. The free circulation of the software will help us to find any possible bugs, error or problems which may FolioLink cause. Please - in case of any problems, do contact us in order to solve them and remove them. Our address is at the end of this document. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. What is FolioLink '95 ------------------------ FolioLink '95 is a communication software of new generation designed for Atari Portfolio (DIP Pocket PC) portable computers. It provides a new way of approach to palmtop computers. With FolioLink your Portfolio RAM cards and RAM disk will become a part of your desktop system. Portfolio drives will appear as another PC drives. For example if you have 4 drives on PC (A:,B:,C:,D:) after installing FolioLink two more drives will be added (E:,F:) standing for your RAM card (A:) and RAM disk (C:) respectively. 2. Hardware requirements ------------------------ FolioLink should work on any PC from XT to P6. The data transfer uses parallel interface. You should have a DOS 5.00 and above installed. On Portfolio 64 KB of free RAM and parallel interface are required. 3. Installation --------------- The software is distributed in a compressed form. In order to make the installation successful it is necessary to use the installation software. Please insert the distribution diskette in your A: drive and enter following command: A:install [enter] If you download FolioLink '95 package from Internet or BBS, it is highly recommended that you copy the files on to a diskette and start the installation from A: drive. If you install from your HDD the installation may not be successful. 4. Limitations of the DEMO VERSION - IMPORTANT ---------------------------------------------- There are several ways in which the demo version is limited: 1. The software is limited to 20 starts for your PC and to 20 start of the "flserver.com" on Portfolio 2. The software has limited maximal file size. If you transfer large files using direct services, Portfolio will abort to DOS with "Request out od memory" announcement. 3. The demoversion is a bit slower that the full version. 4. In Windows your application may "freeze" if Portfolio is not on-line. As soon as you plug in Portfolio again and/or restart the "flserver.com" software, Windows will "melt" and you can continue. Do not forget that Windows sometimes access PC disks in background while your applications are running. If your Portfolio is not on-line this may either result in your Windows being frozen till you connect Portfolio again, or you may receive a warning box "Drive not ready" or a similar message. 5. Known problems ------------------ 1. FolioLink is a DOS/Windows application. It should work in DOS and Windows without any problems. 2. As FolioLink is a 16bit application you are likely to receive a warning or a message about this if your run Windows 95. 3. FolioLink 95 will not work under Windows NT, OS/2 or other systems. 4. !!!!!! FolioLink 95 uses the FT.COM program to transfer a part of the software (flserver.com) to your Portfolio. Under multi- tasking environments (Windows 95, Windows NT, OS/2) FT.COM does not work properly. It may spoil the installation and result in data loss (in print buffer) if you attempt to use the FT.COM software. The installation software will prompt you to skip the FT.COM transfer procedure. We recommend to quit your multitasking environment back to DOS (usually requires rebooting of PC) and use the FT.COM from there. 5. If Portfolio is not connected to your PC, or the FLSERVER.COM software is not active, or should the connecting cable be broken, PC will time out after 20 seconds and will display a message box (in DOS). In Windows, this time-out may result in temporal "freezing" of the active application. This may last for 40 seconds (2x20). 6. Some Windows applications use the PC disks in background without user direct control. If the connection is not set up, this might result in permanent freezing until Portfolio is re-connected. One of such applications is the Windows File Manager. 7. SMARTDRIVE Smartdrive slows down the FolioLink performance very heavily. In Windows, Smartdrive being installed on the Portfolio diskes will result in frequent short freezings of mouse and windows movement. Please uninstall the SmartDrive on the disks that are added by FolioLink '95! For example if FolioLink '95 adds D: and E: drives enter following command: smartdrv d-e- ("d" and "e" stand for drive letters, "-" means inactivity) For permanent use, we recommend to enter the Smartdrive limitation into your AUTOEXEC.BAT 7. PC error messages ------------------- Should any error messages appear, this indicates that either the connection is not working properly, or the data on the RAM card, RAM disk are not available (are corrupt). Try to set up the connection again. 8. Portfolio error messages --------------------------- "license has expired" - the end of the demo version period you should erase the software and buy the full version of you want to use the software "request out of memory" - this is a system message - it means that the PC has tried to transfer a data block too big to fit into Portfolio free RAM. The demo version has a limited size of this block to about 60 KB. "Reading error on A:" - if you do not have a RAM card plugged into Portfolio and yet you attempt to read (write) into it this will result into an error. You should either insert the card and press (R)etry or (A)bort the request by quitting to DOS. 9. Your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS ----------------------------------- FolioLink '95 will modify four AUTOEXEC and CONFIG files. The old version of the files will be save in C:\PORTFOL with *.OLD extension. If you decide to uninstall FolioLink '95 use the "noflink" batch file. This will put your AUTOEXEC and CONFIG files into original state. 10. The PORTFOL directory ------------------------- FolioLink will create PORTFOLIO directory on your C: drive. This directory will contain following files: FLINK BAT performs installation after BOOT UP, do not run CONFIG OLD stored CONFIG.SYS FLSERVER COM the Portfolio part of the FolioLink FT COM file transfer software VIEWLOGO EXE views the logo bitmap LOGO PCX the logo bitmap FLCLIENT SYS the DOS driver that installs FolioLink on your PC NOFLINK BAT run this file to uninstall FolioLink FLSYSTEM DAT system data for FolioLink, do not remove or modify INTEGRAL COM this file test integrity of FolioLink installation FLCLIENT DAT system data for FolioLink, do not remove or modify AUTOEXEC OLD stored AUTOEXEC,BAT BIX EXE optional - used to view the presentation PREVIEW BAT optional - run this file to view the presentation PREVIEW directory with presentation images 11.
